Am I the only person who finds this distasteful?
I won’t call it sexist, because I sort of see what it’s trying to do. Usually beer commercials are all thin, beautiful, busty, half-naked women. So maybe this is saying hey, our beer is so great that we don’t need that.
Or maybe it’s because the beer industry is dominated by men, so they’re like, oh hey you thought this was a man until we told you it was actually a woman. So we’re awesome and progressive and whatnot.
But in the end, it’s controversial because it can easily be misread as sexist, or just straight up offensive. And what about the kids who see this commercial and don’t know enough to read into it, so even if Newcastle was trying to send a good message, all that the kids get out of it is what every other form of media is already screaming at them: You can’t be on TV or famous unless you’re gorgeous. This woman is ugly so we won’t show her, as opposed to everyone is beautiful no matter what. Love yourself.
Newcastle is delicious. But this commercial really just rubbed me the wrong way.
